Tea, paint, rain, blues & the housewives.

Whoa buddy. I've had a busy, busy week so far. A busy week SANS coffee! R and I finally decided to ditch the java-- so now we're just getting our caffeine via tea. A much more subtle jolt with no crash-- we're going to hit up the oriental market this weekend to see if we can find some reishi-mushroom tea. Which restores your Shen energy.

On Monday I taught Disaster Education classes to 140 sweet as can be 5-12 year olds. Pretty much they were the cutest things ever.. some were more tolerable than others, but it was a very fun & exhausting day. We talked about tornadoes and hurricanes and they were just so smart, I was quite impressed.

Then after volunteering on Tuesday I started a new painting, and I think I like it, so we'll see where it goes. I'm going to add in the swamp today. Can anyone guess that I am in love with Florida?

Speaking of, Florida has been quite rainy. A lot of whiny, spoiled Floridians are complaining about it. I think that is dumb. It's like 80 degrees and gorgeous 10 months out of the year here, it's been raining for a few days. So what.. We've been in a drought, AND now we can have fireworks on the 4th of July for the first time in 5 years. If it stops raining that is. ;)

This guy, Ben Prestage has been playing a lot around here recently (he's from here), and it just makes me so happy because.. I love me some good music, and this guy is a genius-one-man-band. So since he was playing and I was invited to hang out with a new friend I sent my evening tapping my toes and swinging my hips.

AND one more final thing...

I have two guilty pleasures in life.. The real Housewives of NJ and Orange county.. and I am just wondering.. Are people ACTUALLY that insane? I got stressed out just watching the season finale of RH of OC-- they are all so craaaaazzzzzy! I am glad I am not rich.

Namaste!

Thursday and the cosmos.

The Cosmos, 12x12inches wax (crayon) on canvas, For Sale *experimental special* $50

I had an incredible walk this morning and yesterday I bought 4 books via amazon that I can't wait to get my paws on.

ANYWHO I've been wanting to read the first two books for YEARS now and I was turned on to Utopia or Oblivion after watching a documentary on Netflix called 2012: Time for change (I know, the title is lame sauce, but it was totally worth a watch).

SO now that I am waiting for my books to come in, I decided to try a little experiment with crayons-- I've been seeing crayon art all over pinterest, so I gave it a shot, and clearly the cosmos are beckoning me because what was suppose to be a Florida Lagoon Landscape quickly turned into nebula's and cosmic dust.

It's possible that I have finally lost my marbles, and I couldn't be more thirlled.

On a more normal, relatable note.. I made some AWESOME boiled peanuts last night, and tonight I am making a veggie lasagna and noshing with a new friend while R hikes with an old one.

I'll be posting recipes in the near future!

Happy Thursday!

Namaste!

The sea, shore and a hair cut.

Happy Monday!

We had a jam packed weekend filled with running around, botching our normal (sleep) schedule, visiting with family (and friends!) and swimming in the ocean. I'd say it was a pretty damn good weekend.

On Saturday we drove to Orlando (which is about 2.5 hours from our little town) to sell one of my paintings, and visit with my grandparents who summer in Maine. We also enjoyed a lovely nacho-esque dinner with my in-laws and watched the horse race. We all "bet" on our horses with beer, my father-in-law and I picked the winning horse, so I rewarded myself with another glass of vino. ;)

I sold a painting this weekend that I was commissioned to do-- the clients loved it, so I am a happy girl. Painting commissions is a lot of fun, but they are more nerve wreaking since the client has a vision too. Selling something I've already made is a no brainer... making something FOR someone is stressful because there is always a possibility that the client wont be happy with my work. This has actually never happened to me, but it's bound to one day.. you can't make all of the people happy all of the time.

In this case they were very happy, so I am very happy too.

The Sea & The Shore, acrylic $360 SOLD 16x40 inches on canvas

On Sunday I decided that I was sick of my hair, so I cut it all off and I am SO glad I did. I don't know why I even bother growing my hair out, I love it short.

I look a little scary in the before picture because I didn't want them to know I was taking a picture of myself at the salon, although no one would have cared anyway..

I feel so free now and all that dyed crap has been cut out. After a few more trims I will be back to my natural hair color for the first time in over 15 years! I am trying to break the evil cycle of coloring my hair, this was a great start to ending that cycle.

After I got my hairs cut we spend the evening with out good friends enjoying the beautiful weather at one of our favorite little spots-- it was nice catching up with friends, we've all been so busy lately there hasn't been much time for that.

This week I am going to try something a little new in the diet/workout department.. so I'll probably share some of that on Wednesday, I am starting a new painting today (maybe) and this is going to be an awesome week!

How was your weekend?

Namaste!

Painting the ocean and some other things.

Team R&R has had a great week.

R was personally contacted and commissioned to do some special work for a website that sells images and videos, I was hired to do a custom painting, I have a really cool opportunity to work with some awesome young folks making their dreams come true, and R and I have been coming up with a business model to get our personal work out there, sold, and on peoples minds.

Getting paid to do what you love is a serious high.

As far as what R and I are doing.. This cute little town that we live in has a decent artist community-- which means, people buy art, so we're entertaining opening a booth at the local downtown market. He's going to feature his photography, I'm going to feature my paintings and hopefully we'll be rolling in dough ASAP. I'm assuming we need to get a legit LLC going before we open the booth so we're not screwed by the IRS.

Side note: I have to say I think it is serious BS that I have to give the government my hard earned money-- especially when you consider there are MILLIONS of people out there abusing the system, and I couldn't even collect unemployment after working non-stop for 9 years-- all because of a technicality.

Don't get me started on social security.

I hate capitalism with a bloody passion. HATE.IT.

Here is a prog shot of what I have been working on this week. Florida-ish/beach/nature art is my favorite to work on, so I was really excited to hired for this.

So that's all. Hope all is well with my fellow bloggers.

Namaste!

Art & Soul: All good art starts with a love story.

Okay so as promised sometime last week, I am going to start posting some of my artwork on a weekly basis, so why not on Thursdays?

I won't make art posts so word heavy every week, but since we are creeping up on Valentines Day, I thought I would share my art with my real life love story. A story that started with heart break, but ends with a happily ever after.

I hope you all enjoy.

If you have meet your soul mate, then you know being away from them is like missing a lung (if you don't believe in soul mates, then you.are.missing.out my friend). Once you realize that person exists, even if you have known them your entire life, everything changes. Your world turns into this magical place, where all of a sudden everything leading up to that moment feels serendipitous.

It was January 08' and I had been living in Chicago for about 3.5 years. I had just been dumped by my live-in boyfriend, a guy I had been dating for the past 2 years. I saw it coming. But for some reason, I still wanted it to work, even though we were both really unhappy. I just wanted to fix him and us.

The worst part about the break up was, we had to continue living with each other until we were financially independent. Neither one of us were in the financial position to break a lease and most of our friends had recently signed leases with other people-- so we were stuck and just had to make something work. We got another bed, split up the bedroom, kept the common areas, and sucked it up.

It goes without saying that those 5 months before I moved were a real test-- To say Mike and I were over each other is a gross understatement and being nice was near impossible for BOTH of us (however, I will say, he was a bit nastier than I was-- we're "cool" now though, if anyone cares.)

We BOTH experienced a lot of stress post break up, but I was determined to find a way to stay in Chicago-- after all, I was there for me, not Mike.

Flash back a bit to, Christmas Eve '07: I got a call from Rob while I was on the train headed to Mike's hometown, a Northern suburb of Chicago-- I was bawling my eyes out on a crowded train, so he really couldn't have called at a more perfect time.

In those moments before he called, I had never felt so alone in my life. Mike and I had so many problems (we ended up breaking up 3 weeks later), his mother wasn't a huge fan of me, which was something I never experienced before (parents have always loved me).. and I freaking missed my family, whom I had not seen in over a year. Christmas was especially sad for me that year. R somehow, in less than 30 minutes changed my entire approach to the weekend I would spend with Mike and his family, and as always he found a way to make me feel incredibly loved and special and he didn't even know it.

Those first few months of 2008, held some of my darkest hours-- but you know who was there, even from 1500 miles away? Rob. Sure we had been best friends for over four years already, but I was in a relationship for 2 of those years-- so I probably wasn't always such a good friend in return.

After that Christmas, I heard from Rob on a weekly basis. (I think he was worried.) He was selflessly choosing to hold my hand through the chaos and he showed me the unconditional love I so desperately needed at that time.

..after Mike and I broke up, the emails from R were more frequent, the calls lengthier and I found myself staying up into the wee morning hours giggling over AIM conversations with this person I had so many wonderful feelings for. He was a true beacon of light, and he really helped me stay afloat.

I was finding happiness again.

Then in March (08), I was gifted a flight home to attend my aunts baby shower. When R found out that I would be in Orlando, without one second of hesitation he asked me out on our second first date. (Our first occurring June 04, the summer we met).

I was apprehensive because if it went well, then.. how would we do long distance? I had absolutely no interest in moving home. Above all, I was petrified of being rejected. When I lived in Orlando I was a slender 135lbs, and that spring I weighed an embarrassing 185lbs. If you can't do math, that's a 50 pound surplus.

There was no way he would still find me attractive.

But as the story goes, that night, on our second first date, R and I fell madly in love, and I knew I only had one choice if I wanted to be happy for the rest of my life. (No pressure or anything) I think I got a total of 3 hours of sleep that entire weekend. R and I would stay up all night: talking, kissing, hugging...

(it was all  innocent you freak pervs!!!)

...and I would have him drop me back off at my parents house just in time for coffee with my dad. Luckily my father chose to ignore that I was out all night, and just kept the coffee coming.

The first time I saw Rob, back in High School, I knew he was going to be an important person in my life, so when we became good friends I thought that was it. But that night, for the first time ever I started to believe in soul mates and there was no way I could deny it because, there he was, and he had been there all along.

So... that weekend, I shocked my family with the news that I would be moving home as soon as I could get my affairs in order back in Chicago.

When I got back to Chi, I started walking home from work. I worked in the West Loop and lived in Rogers park, for those of you who do not know Chicago, that is about a 10 mile walk-- I did this so I would have less negative interaction with Mike, and so I would lose some weight before moving back to sunny, half-naked all the time, Florida.. (I lost 20 lbs in 2 months just from walking for the record).

Something wonderful and unexpected happened during those walks... I found myself again. I was incredibly inspired by the changing of the season: Mother nature was waking up from her deep, cold slumber.. and so was I.

I was so thankful for every single one of those eye opening miles. I found so much peace in myself and every single step I took literally got me closer to being ready for the love of a life time.

(By the time I left Chicago in May 08' I had walked over 200 miles along the lake shore.)

On those walks I had a lot of time to think. I kept finding myself smiling at the thought of spending my life with Rob but, I missed him tremendously, so sometimes I was sad too.

So every week that we were apart I sent him a package.

Sometimes I sent him sea glass, sometimes I sent him pictures of us from back in the day, but most of the time I sent him paintings.

Specifically, I sent him a lot of trees.

...And occasionally I would send him some photography from my walks.
West Side City, March 2008

That same April, R attended a seminar in Iowa on Transcendental Meditation (mainly because he is a huge David Lynch fan, and wanted to see the guy in the flesh) After seeing the man himself, Rob rented a car, drove to Chicago and surprised me with a visit and a rather fancy hotel room. (It wasn't a complete surprise, since I knew he was coming about 4 days prior)

Here are some pics from that visit.

In his element, April 2008

Don't laugh. I know. I was chunky.

...and we are living happily ever after.

{All of the paintings were done with Acrylic paint, and the texture was done with a mixture of salt and pumice rock gel medium. They are each done on 4x4x2 canvas, *originals not for sale* prints available if interested, email me for pricing: ryanadairs(at)gmail(dot)com}

"Do what you love, and do it often"

I have some exciting news!

I have been commissioned to do a mural for a school gymnasium!
It's a simple job, but when you get paid to do what you love it's really exciting and very rewarding.

For three years I worked as a receptionist/office assistant for a fairly large home builder. I thought I liked my job, ya know... good hours, paid holidays, salary, benefits.. it was a good gig, especially for someone who had to put their BFA on hold until money started growing on trees (still waiting).

In January of this year I was laid off (along with about 12 other people); luckily I was hired on by another company the very next week, and the week after that I was promoted to a manager position. I started to realize that this new company and I had very little in common. For instance, I don't lie... they do. I just couldn't handle the stress of trying to keep up with lies and inconsistencies, so I walked in to the HR office, handed over my company iPhone and said:

"I can not compromise my moral integrity for a corrupt company that doesn't have the customers or employees best interest in mind. I'd rather scrub toilets at a gas station than go home everyday hating myself for working here. Here are your things"
(Yes, I really did say this, verbatim)

Then I handed her a piece of paper to sign verifying that I returned all their belongings so she couldn't deduct anything from my paycheck.
Deducting monies from former employees paychecks was common practice, unbelievable I know..
But I kid you not my friends.
You got to be smart and cover your ass.

When I think about these 2 minutes of my life, I just smile. I was so proud of myself for standing up for what I believed in.  Did I mention when I went into her office I was dressed and ready to go to the beach? If that's not a big Eff-You, I don't know what is.

That week I decided I was going to focus on my art, because art that is what I love. Happiness is so simple.

If we live our lives waking up each morning, dreading the day.. what kind of life is that?
I want to wake up excited about my day, so that is what I do now.

I realized that even when I had that job with the home builder, the only thing I really liked about it was seeing my step mom everyday, having the same days off as Rob and some of my co-workers were pretty rad, but for the most part, I was so unstimulated I couldn't stand myself.
No wonder I had a nervous breakdown.
(This is a different can of worms that I will get into later; I experienced complete HELL on earth for about four months of my life last year; I just don't think I can articulate that experience well enough to share yet)
The other thing I liked about that job was being able to live in my own apartment. A recluse such as myself does not fair well with roomies. :)

I know the economy is tough, but it's not impossible.
Nothing is impossible if you work for it.

SO, all that being said.. I start on Monday. I will be sure to document all the highlights of my very first mural experience.
(I've done play backdrops, but that was volunteer work)
I had such a crummy day yesterday, so this news was just what the doctor ordered.

Hope everyone is having a beautiful day,
xo R

she has seashells (5x's fast)

R and I took a stroll on the beach Sunday night after a little (big) dinner. Of course since we opted to not turn around for the camera, the lighting and scenery was more picturesque than usual. Which had me taking photos of my loot on the back porch the next morning.

Luckily I found a bucket, because I was without pockets.

I've spent many hours of my life being healed by the ocean; how do people live in places that are land locked? I think I would go completely mad.. Lake Michigan had some fierce waves; but nothing compares to the salty mist of the sea. You can taste and feel the difference in the air when you are on the sea shore..

When I moved to Chicago; I was shocked by the amount of people I met that either:
A.) had ever been to the ocean, or B.) didn't know how to swim.

The never been to the ocean thing I got, but the can't swim thing seemed really weird and unnatural.
I've been swimming just as long as I have been walking.

P&L,
Ryan

I was playing with the contrasts and lighting, and I found a little world in the wine glass.
I love it when that happens.
